Newcastle striker Andy Carroll will make his England debut against France at Wembley on Wednesday.Manager Fabio Capello revealed that Sunderland midfielder Jordan Henderson, 20, will also make his debut while Arsenal left-back Kieron Gibbs starts. Capello said Carroll, 21, who recently admitted an assault charge, "needs to improve things in his private life". Midfielder Jack Wilshere has been ruled out through injury, while keeper Joe Hart is being assessed by a doctor. That comes after the Manchester City player suffered an injury during a training session at Wembley on Tuesday, while Arsenal's Wilshere - who had been tipped for a first international start - did not take part."Wilshere is going home," said Capello. "[Everton centre-back] Phil Jagielka has flu, but we think he will be OK. "With Hart, the doctor is waiting to decide what happened. We think it will not be a big problem for him." England already have a long list of absentees, with regulars John Terry, Ashley Cole and Glen Johnson - all defenders - and Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney missing because of injury. It was feared that Carroll, who has scored seven goals for newly-promoted Newcastle this season, would miss out after sitting out Monday's training session with a slight injury. But Capello confirmed that he would start, and insisted he was not overly concerned about allegations surrounding Carroll's private life. "No [I'm not]," said the Italian. "You have to help him because he made a mistake, but he is really young. "Everyone makes mistakes during their life."He's a good player and I think he will understand, to stay with the senior [squad] will be really important for him because all the people, the newspapers, journalists will be focused on his life. He'll improve." Capello also spoke in praise of another new cap, Henderson, and urged the Wembley crowd to support the emerging players even if they find it difficult to adjust to international football immediately. "The three players [Carroll, Henderson and Gibbs], we have to support them if the performances are not okay," he said. "It's really important. Also, the senior players like Rio Ferdinand, Gareth Barry and Steven Gerrard have to help these players." Ferdinand, the England captain, insisted he had no concerns about Capello being forced to throw youngsters in as injuries mount up. "It's fantastic," said the Manchester United defender. "There's nothing better than seeing a young lad get his first cap, go out here, and lap it all up. "We've got full confidence in them and will back them to the hilt. "I think he [Andy Carroll] is a real talent. He's not just a big lad who can head the ball in the net, he's got good feet as well. Newcastle have got a fantastic player on their hands." |
