England coach Capello wants Andy Carroll to improve

Coach Fabio Capello believes striker Andy Carroll is still short of his best form, despite scoring his first England goal in the 1-1 draw against Ghana.The England coach's comments came a day after he revealed a conversation he had with Liverpool's £35m striker telling him to reduce his alcohol intake. "He scored a good goal but he needs to improve," Capello told BBC 5 live. "He's not the same Carroll I remember, he needs games. I hope he'll be back to his best for Switzerland in June." Carroll opened his senior account for the national side with a low shot on 43 minutes before Sunderland forward Asamoah Gyan equalised in second-half stoppage time."It's great to be playing again and to have scored a goal. I'm here and ready to score goals if picked," stated Carroll. A Euro 2012 qualifier against the Swiss is up next for Capello's side, who successfully employed a 4-3-3 formation in Saturday's 2-0 victory against Wales in Cardiff and the draw at Wembley. England stand-in captain Gareth Barry said the new system is has become a useful ploy for coach Capello. "The big thing was that the change of formation has been very positive," said the Manchester City midfielder."We put in a good performance against the Welsh and in the first half tonight. It's a great plus that this is a formation that the manager can use." Meanwhile, Capello said he was pleased with the competitive spirit shown by both sides in the friendly. "It was a fantastic game, I'm very happy," he continued. "It was not a friendly game, there were two teams on the pitch playing well, strongly, with lots of tackles. It was absolutely not a friendly game. I'm really happy with the performance. "The players played without fear, with confidence. Ghana are a really good team. The whole performance was fantastic." Capello also praised Aston Villa's Ashley Young for his display in attack."Young has been one of most interesting players this season," added the Italian. "He changed position and played more freely. His movement was really good and he was dangerous when he received the ball because technically his vision is really good." Capello also fended off the suggestion that Danny Welbeck was handed his England debut to keep him out of Ghana's clutches. The Manchester United forward, on loan at Sunderland, came on late in the match having been brought into the squad as a result of the injury to Aaron Lennon. However, because the match was a friendly, Welbeck is still eligible to play for Ghana. "I work for England. I always select the best players for England," he added."Yesterday, Aaron Lennon was injured. That is why I picked Welbeck. "Welbeck is going to be a very important player for England and Manchester United." Ghana coach Goran Stevanovic had words of regret over England debutant Welbeck. "I asked for him various times," said Stevanovic. "Unfortunately he has chosen England. It is bad news for us but I wish him all the best."
